Its a common occurrence for website publishers to "exchange" hyperlinks. It's typically beneficial to both exchanging websites from search engine results perspective. SERPs are Search Engine Results Pages. A search engine like Google relies on links from one website to another to rate a given site in its rankings. So exchanging links hopefully does indicate an appreciation of another site, but it may simply be done as an attempt to improve the position of a given website in search engine results. I believe search engines are catching onto this and may negate any gain. But I'm also supportive of other website owners as long as they meet certain minimal standards. I won't link to any site of dubious nature.
