Adsense slow status

I've decided to add a status page for the fix slow Adsense article.  Here I'll report successes and problems with the performance enhancement.

Status: Performance enhancement removed 9/3/2005.  With the "fix" in place ads are only shown intermittently and unreliably.

9/5/2005 On 8/30/2005 Google made a change which appears to make the Adsense Slow Fix unreliable

I believe it is related to their implementation of Section Targeting.  I've experimented with "wrapping" Section Targeting directives around the pertinent content and the pertinent IFrames in which Adsense code is embedded, but this made no improvement.  At this time I've restored a conventional installation of the Adsense Code and this has rectified the unreliable display of ads.  Also, at this time, at least so far, it appears Google has improved the performance of their servers, or revised their design so web pages render more quickly.  Google's section targeting feature.  Some Webmasterworld commentary.  Some negative WW commentary.

My post on Webmasterworld regarding this potential performance and quality degradation.

8/7/2005 Multiple Ad Units and Page Impression statistics

I've been having a go round with the Adsense team.  Recently I had three Ad Units and an Ad Links unit on virtually all my web pages.  The Adsense reporting page was indicating twice the number of page impressions than were actually occurring.  I ultimately pulled two Ad Units, to correct the problem.  Adsense insisted there was no problem, but I was able to fix it, Hmmm! So I'm back to one Ad Unit and one Ad Links unit.  What's funny is, I've had two Ad Units and one Ads Links unit in the past and not had this 2X Page Impression statistic problem.  When I did add the 3 Ad units, this was the first time they were split between two separate IFrames.  Adsense did quickly crawl the newly required page of html to support the frame.  But it appears Adsense can't do the math to get this correct.

1/14/2004 Everything's still go.

Performance is good, Adsense relevance is fine.

12/7/2004 10:24 AM EST  Norton's Ad blocker

I've also noted that now that the Google code is in a separate page the Norton ad blocking software seems to actually more effectively block the Google Adsense ads, I'm not sure why.  For example on some pages I have a single ad, in essence followed by a skyscraper ad.  The single ad shows and the skyscraper doesn't.  Before this fix the skyscraper would show but not all the hyperlinks.  In the past Norton seemed like it blocked all the Google Adsense hyperlinks, but now it appears it doesn't completely block the ads.

As of today the performance enhancement seems to work fine.  I used IFrames and actually don't have a "frames" design of my website.  My implementation does put the Adsense code on an empty page however.  When generating Adsense code if you look at the link for help with frames Adsense implies the code must be on the same page as the content.  My enhancement uses Inline Frames which appear to work fine.   Please see:
Google Adsense Support Help "Framed Page"
